The Art, History & Palaces of Vienna & The Danube Valley Next year's holiday will be to Vienna and the Danube Valley and is a 6 day trip staying in Vienna organised by Tailored Travel departing 30th September 2027. Cost £1,869. Single room supplement £199 pp. Insurance £92 pp. 5 night stay in the 4* Parkhotel Schonbrunn in Vienna The cost includes dinner on days 1 & 5 (drinks not included), while the other days are on a bed and breakfast basis. The trip includes a guided city tour of Vienna including a visit to Karlskirche, the largest baroque church north of the Alps, Ruprechtskirche, Vienna’s oldest church and St Stephen’s Cathedral dating back to 1147. After lunch (not included) there is an afternoon visit to Schönbrunn Palace, commissioned in 1696 by Leopold I, completed in 1730, and adapted in the mid 18th century for Maria Theresa. On the next day the first stop is a guided tour of Baroque Melk Abbey, begun as a palace stronghold in the 10th century and given to Benedictine monks in the 12th century, the interior is lavishly gilded, has ceiling frescoes and superb sculpted pulpit, choir and confessionals. In the afternoon there is an included cruise along the scenic Danube to Krems, the area centre of the wine industry, with its mixture of historical buildings and a Renaissance town hall. On day 4 there is a visit to the morning exercise session at the Spanish Riding School where the white Lipizzan stallions are put through their paces , followed by a visit the Imperial Apartments at the Hofburg Palace, the residence of the Hapsburgs for over 600 years. In the afternoon there is a guided tour at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, a huge and sumptuously decorated building in which are to be found paintings, mainly the Old Masters from the 15th to the 18th centuries, antiquities, sculptures and decorative arts, coins and medals, and numerous other artefacts. In the evening there is an optional classical concert (subject to the concert programme which has not yet been finalised for the 2027 season). On the penultimate day there is a guided tour at the Secession Building, which is home to a fine collection of works by pioneering artists that continue to redefine contemporary art, followed by an afternoon guided tour of the Albertina, a grand Viennese palace that has recently been made the home of a permanent exhibition tracing the progression from Impressionism to Modernism. A farewell dinner is included in the evening while on the last day a morning visit is made to Upper Belvedere Palace, which has a fine collection of Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present day, before transferring to Vienna for the flight home.
